Gas Hobs Buying Guide

Gas Hobs

Gas hobs are the most common hobs found in kitchens at the moment. With a quaint, traditional look, instant heat, and precise control, they provide an excellent and reliable way of cooking food.

» How will it fit into my kitchen?

Hobs come with 2 measurements: one for the overall size of the hob and one for the cut out size. The cut out size is the space you need to “cut-out” of your worktop to sit the hob in, so that the main machine can hang below, fully integrating it with your kitchen!

The most common widths for Gas hobs fall between:

  • 50cm and under for two or single burner domino hobs.
  • Between 58cm and 60cm for four burner hobs.
  • Between 65cm and 80cm for 5 burner hobs - this variation is so wide due to the size and type of burners.
  • Between 80cm and 100cm for 6 burner hobs - this variation is so wide due to the size and type of burners.

» What pans can I use?

You can use any pan on a gas hob. Just make sure the flame doesn’t go around the edges of your cookware, for it may damage the handle.

Safety

With the heat source visible, it makes it much easier to see what the hob’s doing and how high the heat is, which is a more reliable and visual way of managing your cooking. What’s more, the heat and power can be turned off instantaneously if there’s a problem.

Energy Efficiency

Although not considered the most energy efficient in comparison to other hobs, the precise controlling of the temperature means that you can keep an eye on, and control the direction of the heat, so that as little heat as possible goes round the edge of the pan, wasting less energy.

Speed

Gas hobs are renowned for providing instant heat. The smooth gliding control knobs allow you to precisely control the exact size of the flame and the temperature, so you can take your cooking from simmering to boiling speedily and efficiently.

Cleaning

A lot of gas hobs have pan supports that can separate into bits for easier cleaning and better access to the surface. Simply wipe over with a warm, damp cloth or for a more serious clean, take a warm soapy sponge to the surface and pan supports.

Temperature Control

Considered the best hob for controlling heat, you can get instantaneous temperature from the minute you ignite the burner. With the heat source visible, it’s easy to control the temperature with the rotary controls in line with the size of the flame below the pan.
