Tumble Dryer FAQs

Our unpredictable British weather can make drying washing outside a challenge. With that in mind, many people use a tumble dryer, which removes their reliance on our sporadic sunshine. This allows them to maintain a regular washing routine and avoid drying damp clothes on radiators or airers, which can lead to condensation, mould and unpleasant odours.

Today's dryers are very efficient, so there's no need to worry about excessive energy usage. For example, heat pump tumble dryers recycle their warm air and dry clothes using very little energy. To learn more about energy ratings, take a look at our energy ratings explained guide here.

The easiest way to start searching through all our tumble dryers is by answering a few simple questions.

  • Do you want a freestanding or integrated unit?
  • How large is the area where it will sit?
  • What is your preferred drum capacity? Top tip: We recommend matching your dryer to your washing machine's drum capacity from 2.5kg to 10kg

Next, it's time to choose your tumble type. In addition to the heat pump dryers explained above, there are two others:

  • Vented tumble dryers allow damp air to escape through a vent in your wall or window via a hose.
  • Condenser tumble dryers collect the extracted moisture in a reservoir, which needs emptying after each cycle. Top tip: A condenser can be placed in any well-ventilated room.
  • What is your preferred drum capacity? Top tip: We recommend matching your dryer to your washing machine's drum capacity from 2.5kg to 10kg

Finally, consider which special functions your dryer should have. These differ from brand to brand, as can the names of these features. The Bosch range lets you monitor moisture or temperature levels and then powers off on reaching them. While others, like the Indesit range, feature a reverse drum to stop clothes from getting tangled. Then, there are scheduling, steam treatment and even smartphone-controlled tumble dryers.

And there you have it. It's time for us to let you finish shopping. If you need a hand removing, recycling or connecting your dryer, we'd be happy to help. Learn more about our connection services today.
