Black Friday signals the start of the Christmas shopping period and is traditionally the day after Thanks Giving in North America, which takes place on the fourth Thursday in November each year.
There are 2 different stories explaining why Black Friday has its name, both originating in America. It's believed that many people in Philadelphia gave Black Friday its name due to the huge traffic jam problems caused by the naturally busy shopping day. Others believe it was named Black Friday because most retailers would usually operate at a loss throughout most of the year and so their accounting figures would be mainly written down in red. However 'Black Friday' was the day in which many retailers began making profit and so would then write down their accounting figures in black.
Black Friday takes place on the last Friday of November meaning this year it falls on Friday 27th November 2015.
