why do I need to know

When trying to determine your overall health, using total body weight is a very vague and inaccurate method. Your body consists of good mass such as water and muscle, and potentially bad mass such as fat (if too high). Just looking at your overall weight does not show how well balanced those different weights are and thus how healthy you actually are. You need to know the following:

Body fat is an incredibly important element of the human body, it protects organs, helps regulate temperature and stores vitamins. Keeping it at a healthy percentage is vital for a fit and well-functioning body. Too much body fat however can have seriously damaging effects on your health and thus knowing the percentage in which it contributes toward your weight is essential.

Weight is useful to know, particularly if an activity requires a certain weight limit, however it should not be used as an indicator of health.

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a commonly used calculation that indicates whether you are a healthy weight considering your height. The calculation involves dividing your weight in KG by your height in metres sq.

It’s important to know how much of your overall weight is occupied by muscle mass as this is a healthy and useful substance within the body. Having more muscle mass in your body has many benefits including an increase in strength, metabolic efficiency and vitality. If you are concerned about your weight then knowing your muscle percentage is key in deciding whether you’re actually overweight or in perfectly healthy condition with a high muscle percentage.

Your body needs water for many reasons including proper organ function, temperature regulation and efficient digestion. It is therefore very important to ensure your total body water percentage is at a healthy level. This can also improve concentration and muscle performance so close monitoring is highly recommended.

Like muscle, bone is a living tissue that responds to exercise and becomes stronger. It’s believed that most people see a peak in bone mass when in their 30’s. After this time it can begin to weaken. Monitoring and exercising bone mass can improve its strength, reducing the likelihood of fractures. Frequently monitoring your bone mass can also help in spotting early signs of Osteoporosis.

What Makes These Scales So Clever? (BIA)

These scales use a process known as BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) which sends a small electrical current through your body. The scales calculate your body fat and muscle etc. by analysing the resistance on the current. Muscle, with its high content of water, helps to transmit the current whilst fat impedes it giving the scales an accurate reading of your body’s composition.

Where Can I Find The App?

If you have a compatible Apple device then you can find the app on the App Store by simple searching for ‘BlueAnatomy’. If you’re using an android device then just search for ‘BlueAnatomy’ in the Google Play Store. The app is completely free to use.

What Units of Measurement Do The Scales Use?

You can view your body’s key statistics in Pounds (LB) Kilos (KG) or Stones (ST). These can be changed within the Settings area of the BlueAnatomy app.

What Does TBW Stand For?

TBW refers to ‘Total Body Water percentage’. This is the total amount of fluid in the body expressed as a percentage of your total body weight. This is one of the many measurements these scales can take.

Why Can’t I Use These If I’m Pregnant or Have a Pacemaker?

This product shouldn’t be used if you are pregnant or have a pacemaker as it sends a low level electrical signal through your body to achieve its high accuracy readings. This may interfere with any implanted medical devices.

What Batteries Do The Scales Require?

The scales just need 4 X AAA batteries to perform. There is a removable cover underneath the scales where the batteries are inserted.
