An undermount kitchen sink is fixed below the worktop rather than resting on top. This creates a smooth edge and makes the area easier to wipe down.
An undermount sink tends to suit solid, water-resistant surfaces such as quartz, granite and compact laminate. Standard chipboard laminate may not be suitable because its exposed edge can absorb water. Check the worktop maker’s advice before ordering.
A stainless steel undermount sink is light, heat resistant and simple to clean, though light scratches and water marks may show. Those in black add bold contrast, but pale limescale can stand out on darker finishes. Meanwhile, white undermount sinks can brighten the worktop, although food stains may need quick cleaning. Always follow the maker’s care guide and avoid harsh scourers that could mark the finish.
The best undermount kitchen sinks for your space are those that fit the cabinet, worktop and daily routine. Check the outer width, bowl depth and minimum cabinet size, not just the visible bowl.
Leave enough room for taps, clips, pipework and the waste kit. Ceramic and composite models can be heavy, so they may need added support below. A skilled fitter can also seal the edge well and help prevent leaks.
