Frequently asked questions about Pressure washers

Which is the best pressure washer to buy?

There are several types of electric pressure washers, offering different levels of pressure, weight, and affordability. As a rule, the higher the bar, the more powerful the wash.

  1. 110 bars to 120 bars are perfect for light-duty jobs, like cleaning small cars, garden furniture and patios that aren't too dirty. Look for a compact model if you want a lightweight washer.
  2. Up to 130 bars is ideal for medium-duty work. This includes intense cleaning of muddy patios, garden walls and larger family-size cars.
  3. Choose 145 bars or more for heavy-duty cleaning. These pressure washers clean larger stained areas like patios and big vehicles easily. Please note these are the heaviest machines.

Keep in mind the water flow rate to understand how much water is used per hour. The higher the flow rate, the quicker your cleaning session will be. But it'll also be more expensive to run. Some pressure washers come with special nozzles for patios and cars, plus cleaning detergents. Finally, check the cable can reach from your home to your cleaning location. If it doesn't, you can use an extension cable, but please use it with care

What do you put on a driveway before pressure washing?

Change into sensible clothes, protective shoes and safety goggles. Then, clear any debris with a leaf blower or broom. Next, apply a degreaser to any stubborn marks on your drive. Then, connect your hose to the pressure washer and add a stone detergent. Fit the correct nozzle onto your pressure washer and begin cleaning from the centre of your driveway, starting on the lowest setting. Work towards the edges spraying back and forth in sweeping motions, ensuring the sprays overlap. Finish by hosing down nearby plants to remove grime. Then, for a perfect finish, protect your driveway with a sealant.

Are electric pressure washers any good?

Electric pressure washers are quieter, cheaper to buy and run, and easier to maintain than gas pressure washers. They're also perfect for cleaning household items, like patios, cars and driveways because they're lightweight. When choosing between an electric and gas pressure washer, it really depends on how often you will use it and how much you're willing to spend.

What is the difference between a power washer and a pressure washer?

Both machines clean using pressurised water, but the main difference is the water temperature. Power washers use hot water and are more commonly found in large commercial properties, as the heat removes stubborn dirt quickly and easily. While pressure washers use cold water and are less harsh on surfaces, making them ideal for household use.

Can I use an extension cord with an electric pressure washer?

Yes, providing you use it safely. Your extension must have a minimum 14-gauge cord and be shorter than 25ft. Also, remember to unwind it entirely to prevent overheating.

What size pressure washer do I need to clean a deck?

Use a pressure washer with a maximum of 150 bars. Anything with too high pressure will do more damage than good and may splinter the wood. To pressure wash decking, start by clearing any debris with a leaf blower or broom. Then, change into sensible clothes, shoes and safety goggles. Connect your pressure washer to a hosepipe, and add sufficient wood detergent into your pressure washer. Attach the correct nozzle, then, starting on the lowest setting, clean in the direction of the wood grain. Spray back and forth in a sweeping motion, and overlap the sprays.
