Hob Types?

There are 4 main types of hobs available ranging in price and functionality.

Induction Hobs.

Induction Hobs

Directly heating the pan and not the hob surface, these hobs are a safer and more energy efficient choice. They heat up fast but not as fast as gas hobs. Their modern and smooth surface makes them easy to wipe clean.

Induction hobs heat up the quickest and can deliver a wide temperature range

Heat is generated in the pan itself so the hob surface remains cooler so can be wiped clean while you cook

Induction hobs only work with magentic pans such as cast iron or induction ready steel pans

Ceramic Hobs.

Ceramic Hobs

These hobs have a modern look and their smooth surface makes them really easy to wipe clean. They heat up faster than sealed plate hobs but not as fast as gas or induction hobs.

Ceramic hobs heat pans through heat transfer from the heating elements to the pan

The flat cooking zones provide even heat to the base of the pan

The surface will be hot after cooking, residual heat indicators warn you if the surface is still hot.

These hobs are robust but tend to be slower at heating up. They are a more affordable option and definitely worth considering if you're on a tight budget or you're fitting out a rental property.

They are straightforward to use and reliable

How will it fit?

Depending on the size of your kitchen units and your cooking requirements there will be lots of hobs to choose from, so it is worth considering how many pans you usually cook with at once and take into consideration the size of the unit the hob will be intergated into. Hobs are built into the worktop and can be mounted into a gap called the niche which is cut into the worktop this size can be smaller than the overall width of the hob surface.

30cm Hobs.

30cm wide hobs

30cm wide hobs are compact in size and usually has 2 burners or cooking zones and fits into a worktop cutout measuring 270 x 490mm.

60cm wide hobs

This size is the most common hob size and usually has 4 burners or cooking zones and fits into a worktop cutout measuring 560 x 490mm.
