What is BTU?

A BTU (British Thermal Unit) is a rating used to determine the heating or in the case of an Air Conditioner the cooling capacity of an appliance.

Typically a minimum of 7000 BTU is needed to cool a small room, whereas commercial units can reach up to 25,000 BTU and beyond. Simply, the greater the BTU, the larger the space that the unit can cool.

What is a BTU?

1 BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of liquid water by one degree from 60° to 61° Fahrenheit at a constant pressure of one atmosphere. As a general rule we advise you to buy an Air Conditioner with a minimum 7,000BTUs as this is the minimum required to cool a small room (18sq/m) on a hot day. Medium rooms (24sq/m) need around 10,000BTUs and larger rooms and office spaces (36sq/m) require around 15,000BTUs.

Please Note: All portable air conditioners must be vented out so the heat is removed from the room that is being cooled. The ideal solution is to vent them through a wall or window. For your convenience this air conditioner is supplied with a hose and a window venting kit so you can start using it straight away! The provided kit is designed to be installed with sliding or sash windows but is not ideal for other window types. However the provided fishtail adapter can be used with most windows or doors. During cooling, the fishtail reducer ensure that the opening is as small as possible. For even better cooling we provide an optional universal window seal at checkout.

Question from Phil: Asked on 21/05/2014 How do you recommend venting the unit if you don't have Sash windows?
Thanks

Answer from Gavin: Answered on 23/05/2014
You can just hang it out the window, it wont affect the performance so much as to notice a difference.

Thanks

Question from Dawn: Asked on 08/06/2013 Please could you tell me whether the adjustable slide bar and slide bar connector come with this product or whether you need to purchase them separately?

Answer from Gavin: Answered on 09/06/2013
Hi, the sash window device come with all of our portable a/c units, this one included.

Thanks

Question from Stephen: Asked on 21/04/2013 What is the effective operating life of this unit and can it be re-gassed easily by a refrigeration company?

Answer from Gavin: Answered on 23/04/2013
Hi, these cannot be re-gassed.

In the past extended warranties have gone up to 5 years, so that would be a good estimate.

Thanks

Question from Ryan: Asked on 11/04/2013 Hello

Should I buy this unit or an Air Cooler? What are the differences between air coolers and air conditioners?

Thanks

Answer from Matthew L: Answered on 11/04/2013
Air cooler lower temp of air and Air conditioner lowers temp in air and also takes moisture out of the air by lowering the air to its dewpoint and condensing the water out. So it cools the air and dries the air as well.

Question from james: Asked on 11/04/2013 Hello

can you tell me if this air conditioner will work for multiple rooms? Will it cool my whole upstairs?
Thanks

Answer from Matthew L: Answered on 11/04/2013
SF12000E is perfect for small to medium sized rooms up to 6m x 4m - the size of an average bedroom.

Question from Mike: Asked on 11/04/2013 How do i know what size air conditioner (BTU level) i need?

Answer from Matthew L: Answered on 11/04/2013
Dependant on how big the space is you need the Air con to flow.

Question from Gem: Asked on 11/04/2013 What is required to set up this portable AC?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
All portable ACs exhaust hot air as part of the cooling process. This hot air is usually directed out of the cooled space using a hot air discharge hose, also known as an exhaust hose. This air hose is often vented out of a window, or through a wall to an adjacent space. Depending on the model you choose, window venting kits may be included.

Thanks

Question from pete: Asked on 11/04/2013 What does it mean when my A/C freezes up? There is ice on the inside?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
Freezing is caused by not enough air flow going through the system.
Reason could be:
Closed /or restricted Vents
Turn 'OFF' A/C and allow few hours to defrost.
Then turn it back 'ON'

Thank you

Question from Jenny: Asked on 11/04/2013 Can you Extend the Hose on this unit?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
We do not recommend this as this may void your warranty and potentially cause your air conditioner to overheat.
Thank you

Question from Carlos: Asked on 27/06/2011 My chimney runs through the bedroom that I want to put the unit in. Can I vent it this way (assuming the chimney is unobstructed)?

Answer from mark h: Answered on 28/06/2011
Yes no problem, the chimney is ideal for venting as the hot air will just rise out of it.

Question from HM: Asked on 08/06/2011 Can this unit be used in a room with no windows or open doors? If so how does it work?

Answer from mark h: Answered on 08/06/2011
Sorry no it cant be. All of our air-conditioning units need to be externally vented through a window, door or into a false ceiling
