Hi Sue,The Adam Colorado Electric Fire is designed for flexible installation, allowing it to be mounted flat to the wall or recessed. You'll only need the included spacer if the available recess depth in your fire surround is less than 148mm, or if you need to ensure proper fitment around any obstructions.Thanks!
