Because as it is a bbq I thought you would need coal to give the food that smoked taste

The burners are covered by a burner cover - the juices and fats drip down onto these and they are then vaporised - This gives the food the smokey flavour on a Gas BBQ. You can add woodchips wrapped in foil on top of your burners if you want to add even more smoked flavour, or buy a smoker box like this one.
