What is a BTU?

1 BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of liquid water by one degree from 60° to 61° Fahrenheit at a constant pressure of one atmosphere. As a general rule we advise you to buy an Air Conditioner with a minimum 7,000BTUs as this is the minimum required to cool a small room (18sq/m) on a hot day. Medium rooms (24sq/m) need around 10,000BTUs and larger rooms and office spaces (36sq/m) require around 15,000BTUs.

Question from Vicky: Asked on 07/05/2013 In terms of value for money, would you recommend the Amcor 12,000 BTU SF12000E or the Amcor 14,000 BTU MF14000E? Also, which model comes with a hose with the smallest diameter? We wish to have as small a window opening as possible when we operate the air conditioner.

Answer from Gavin: Answered on 08/05/2013
Hi Vicky, they all come with a hose the same size, but also come with a fish hole adapter so you can vent out of a smaller hole.

As for the models, it's just about what size room your cooling. Use the calculator;

Question from Tom: Asked on 15/04/2013 How cold will the room get? Will it blow warm air?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
It depends on the heat load in the room and the size of the portable air conditioner. The air conditioner will provide a 15 – 20 degree temperature drop. So if your room is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, then the air coming out of the air conditioner will be 60 – 65 degrees Fahrenheit. As the room cools, the temperature of the air coming from the air conditioner will also drop.

Question from Ansar: Asked on 15/04/2013 can this model be used in a server room ?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
This is one of the most common uses of a portable air conditioner! Even in small computer rooms, a 12000 BTU unit will work best due to the extra heat produced. Moreover, the portable AC will help keep the air dry and more suitable for computer application.

Question from robbie: Asked on 15/04/2013 Is it more energy efficient for the air conditioner to come on for short bursts of cooling (running for five to seven minutes at a time) or to come on and stay on for longer periods? How about the wear and tear on the unit as well?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
A heat pump's job is two-fold. Not only does it remove the heat from your home, it also must remove the moisture from the inside air in order for you to feel comfortable. When the unit first turns on, it will take about seven to 10 minutes for the unit to get to its peak efficiency and remove the moisture from your home. By allowing a unit to run five to seven minutes, you're not getting the most out of the system. The starting and stopping is also hard on the system.

Question from tammie: Asked on 15/04/2013 Can I lengthen the exhaust hose?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
We advise you not to do this as it causes the units to overheat and also voids the manufacturers warranty.

Question from joe: Asked on 15/04/2013 Will I need to empty water? Will water collect in the portable air conditioner?

Answer from vicky: Answered on 15/04/2013
All portable air conditioners produce condensation as they are cooled. This water is then contained in an internal water reservoir. On all of our models, this water reservoir has an auto shutoff feature so that water is never accidentally spilled onto the ground. With the unit off, the water is easily emptied into a drip pan.

Question from Theresa: Asked on 07/04/2013 CAN YOU CONFIRM WHAT THE dB RATING FOR THIS UNIT IS PLEASE

Answer from jason: Answered on 08/04/2013
49db.

Question from Natalia: Asked on 03/03/2013 Hello I want to find the quietest portable air conditioner you have...one that is basically ready to go out of the box...one with no hoses to be put out the window..and one that is easy to move from room to room. Can you please reply to me with more information about your products? Thank You...Natalia Walsh

Answer from Gavin: Answered on 05/03/2013
Hi, all our air-conditioners operate with a hose. You need the vent out all that hot air and moisture.

Decibel ratings start about 49Db for the quietest unit.

Thanks
