In one post it mentions the compartment is inside the storage compartment and another post mentions the battery is in the knob itself. Having just purchased this bbq from you , can you confirm and add a link showing the procedure for replacing the batteries as it is not included anywhere in the instructions manual

Unfortunately keeping a gas bottle in a confined space can be quite dangerous if there happens to be a leak. I would recommend against this.

Yes you can - You can use a smoker box or simply wrap them in foil and place inside (For longer cooking times I would wet these with water first)
