Commercial Microwave
Buying Guide

Choose the right power and controls for your kitchen.

Faster Service, Every Plate

A commercial microwave is often the hardest-working thing in the kitchen.

Commercial microwaves are built to be opened, loaded and run hundreds of times a day. The biggest decision is power: the more watts, the faster each plate heats and the more plates you can serve in a rush.

Which Wattage Do You Need?

As a rule of thumb, match the power to how many times a day you will use it.

PowerBest forTypical users
1000W to 1200WReheating and regenerating at a steady paceCafés, staff rooms, pubs and small kitchens
1500W to 1900WHeavy use and fast turnaround in a rushBusy restaurants, takeaways and canteens
CombinationMicrowave plus convection and grill, so food browns and crispsKitchens without space for a separate oven

Higher wattage cuts the time for each portion. If you are heating plates back to back at lunchtime, a heavy-duty model keeps the queue moving.

Programmable commercial microwave

Manual or programmable?

Manual microwaves have a dial or simple buttons. They are quick to learn, which suits kitchens with lots of different staff.

Programmable microwaves store set times and power levels for each dish. Staff press one button and every portion comes out the same, every shift. Many also have a double or triple quantity button to scale the time for bigger batches.

  • A flatbed cavity has no turntable to break, and gives more usable space for large plates and Gastronorm pans.
  • A stainless steel cavity and body stands up to constant cleaning.
  • Check the cavity size fits the plates and containers you use most.

Why not use a domestic microwave?

Domestic microwaves are designed for a few uses a day. Commercial models have tougher door hinges and latches, more robust magnetrons and cavities that are easier to clean, so they stand up to the constant use of a business kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1000W enough for a commercial microwave?

For steady reheating in a café, pub or staff room, a 1000W commercial microwave is a popular choice. If you are heating many portions back to back, a 1500W to 1900W heavy-duty model will be noticeably faster.

What is a flatbed microwave?

A flatbed microwave has no turntable. The energy is spread from below, so the whole base is usable and there are no moving parts to break or clean around.

Can I put metal in a commercial microwave?

Only if the manufacturer says so. Some commercial models allow shallow metal containers, most do not. Check the instructions for your model.

What does marine spec mean?

Marine spec microwaves are built to run on the 60Hz power supply used on many boats and offshore sites.
